Measurement of interaction forces distributed across the attachment interface in wearable devices is critical for understanding ergonomic physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). The main challenges in sensorization of pHRI interfaces are (i) capturing the fine nature of force transmission from compliant human tissue onto rigid surfaces in the wearable device and (ii) utilizing a low-cost and easily implementable design that can be adapted for a variety of human interfaces. This paper addresses both challenges and presents a modular sensing panel that uses force-sensing resistors (FSRs) combined with robust electrical and mechanical integration principles that result in a reliable solution for distributed load measurement. The design is demonstrated through an upper-arm cuff, which uses 24 sensing panels, in conjunction with the Harmony exoskeleton. Validation of the design with controlled loading of the sensorized cuff proves the viability of FSRs in an interface sensing solution. Preliminary experiments with a human subject highlight the value of distributed interface force measurement in recognizing the factors that influence ergonomic pHRI and elucidating their effects. The modular design and low cost of the sensing panel lend themselves to extension of this approach for studying ergonomics in a variety of wearable applications with the goal of achieving safe, comfortable, and effective human-robot interaction. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 allows the provision of universal free meals (UFMs) in high-poverty school areas. Participation in UFM programs, including through CEP, could reduce meal costs due to economies of scale and a lower administrative burden. We analyzed the School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study (SNMCS) data from 508 UFM-eligible schools (103 UFMs) to evaluate whether meal costs varied by UFM status. We used school-level data to address the non-random selection to UFMs with inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). We estimated a generalized linear model with a log link and gamma distribution to predict meal costs by UFM status and school size. Full costs among medium and large schools were marginally lower in UFM schools for lunch (-$0.673; 95% CI -1.395, 0.0499; p = 0.068) and significantly lower for breakfast (-$0.575; 95% CI -1.077, -0.074; p = 0.025). UFM was not associated with meal costs among smaller schools. Healthy Eating Index scores did not vary significantly by UFMs, suggesting that lower costs could be achieved without an adverse effect on nutritional quality. This analysis is limited by the lack of identified student percentage (ISP) data needed to definitively identify CEP eligibility, although results were robust to sensitivity analyses addressing the lack of ISP data. selleck products The potential policy impact of these findings emphasizes the need for future studies that assess ISP and cost with more recent data and longitudinal designs.Optimum configuration of a micromixer with two-layer crossing microstructure was performed using mixing analysis, surrogate modeling, along with an optimization algorithm. Mixing performance was used to determine the optimum designs at Reynolds number 40. A surrogate modeling method based on a radial basis neural network (RBNN) was used to approximate the value of the objective function. The optimization study was carried out with three design variables; viz., the ratio of the main channel thickness to the pitch length (H/PI), the ratio of the thickness of the diagonal channel to the pitch length (W/PI), and the ratio of the depth of the channel to the pitch length (d/PI). Through a primary parametric study, the design space was constrained. The design points surrounded by the design constraints were chosen using a well-known technique called Latin hypercube sampling (LHS). The optimal design confirmed a 32.0% enhancement of the mixing index as compared to the reference design. The use of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) is common practice in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). We aimed to describe the rate of ONS use to assess their contribution to dietary intake and to determine if they are associated with respiratory status, body composition, muscle strength, bone mineral density (BMD), bone remodeling biomarkers, and plasmatic levels of vitamins. Cross-sectional study. Patients were clinically stable adults recruited from the CF unit. A 4-day prospective dietary questionnaire was conducted; in addition to respiratory variables, body composition, and BMD (through densitometry, DXA), muscle strength (JAMAR dynamometer), fat-soluble vitamins, and bone remodeling biomarkers (vitamins A, D, and E; osteocalcin, OC; undercarboxylated osteocalcin, ucOC; degradation of the C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen, CTX; and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand, RANKL) were also evaluated. The study included 59 subjects with CF (57.6% female, mean age 29.3 ± 9.4 years, and BMI 22.0 ± 3.6 kg/m ). In this study, 22% (13) patients were taking ONS and presented, compared with those not taking them, significantly more total and mild exacerbations and lower BMI; moreover, they showed a significantly higher total daily calorie intake in addition to a higher consumption of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids per kg of body weight, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, D, and E. Vitamin E plasmatic levels were significantly higher in the group on ONS, as was the case with RANKL; finally, a lower rate of vitamin D deficiency was also found. ONS were used by patients with worse respiratory and nutritional statuses and their use was associated with a higher intake of macro- and micronutrients and with better plasmatic levels of fat-soluble vitamins.ONS were used by patients with worse respiratory and nutritional statuses and their use was associated with a higher intake of macro- and micronutrients and with better plasmatic levels of fat-soluble vitamins.A growing number of natural killer (NK) cell-based immunotherapy trials utilize ex vivo expansion to grow and activate allogenic and autologous NK cells prior to administration to patients with malignancies. Recent data in both murine and macaque models have shown that adoptively infused ex vivo expanded NK cells have extensive trafficking into liver tissue, with relatively low levels of homing to other sites where tumors often reside, such as the bone marrow or lymph nodes. Here, we evaluated gene and surface expression of molecules involved in cellular chemotaxis in freshly isolated human NK cells compared with NK cells expanded ex vivo using two different feeder cells lines Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) or K562 cells with membrane-bound (mb) 4-1BB ligand and interleukin (IL)-21. Expanded NK cells had altered expression in a number of genes that encode chemotactic ligands and chemotactic receptors that impact chemoattraction and chemotaxis. Most notably, we observed drastic downregulation of C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) and upregulation of C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) transcription and phenotypic expression.
