Experimental evidence exists that the Ξ-nucleus interaction is attractive. We search for NNΞ and NNNΞ bound systems on the basis of the AV8 NN potential combined with either a phenomenological Nijmegen ΞN potential or a first principles HAL QCD ΞN potential. The binding energies of the three-body and four-body systems (below the d+Ξ and ^3H/^3He+Ξ thresholds, respectively) are calculated by a high precision variational approach, the Gaussian expansion method. Although the two ΞN potentials have significantly different isospin (T) and spin (S) dependence, the NNNΞ system with quantum numbers (T=0, J^π=1^+) appears to be bound (one deep for Nijmegen and one shallow for HAL QCD) below the ^3H/^3He+Ξ threshold. Experimental implications for such a state are discussed. We demonstrate the emergence of an anomalous Hall effect in chiral magnetic textures which is neither proportional to the net magnetization nor to the well-known emergent magnetic field that is responsible for the topological Hall effect. Instead, it appears already at linear order in the gradients of the magnetization texture and exists for one-dimensional magnetic textures such as domain walls and spin spirals. It receives a natural interpretation in the language of Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We show that this chiral Hall effect resembles the familiar topological Hall effect in essential properties while its phenomenology is distinctly different. Our findings make the reinterpretation of experimental data necessary, and offer an exciting twist in engineering the electrical transport through magnetic skyrmions. We consider an active run-and-tumble particle (RTP) in d dimensions and compute exactly the probability S(t) that the x component of the position of the RTP does not change sign up to time t. When the tumblings occur at a constant rate, we show that S(t) is independent of d for any finite time t (and not just for large t), as a consequence of the celebrated Sparre Andersen theorem for discrete-time random walks in one dimension. Moreover, we show that this universal result holds for a much wider class of RTP models in which the speed v of the particle after each tumbling is random, drawn from an arbitrary probability distribution. We further demonstrate, as a consequence, the universality of the record statistics in the RTP problem.Two-dimensional melting is one of the most fascinating and poorly understood phase transitions in nature. Theoretical investigations often point to a two-step melting scenario involving unbinding of topological defects at two distinct temperatures. Here, we report on a novel melting transition of a charge-ordered K-Sn alloy monolayer on a silicon substrate. Melting starts with short-range positional fluctuations in the K sublattice while maintaining long-range order, followed by longer-range K diffusion over small domains, and ultimately resulting in a molten sublattice. Concomitantly, the charge order of the Sn host lattice collapses in a multistep process with both displacive and order-disorder transition characteristics. Our combined experimental and theoretical analysis provides a rare insight into the atomistic processes of a multistep melting transition of a two-dimensional materials system.Electrostatic solitary wave (ESW)-a Debye-scale structure in space plasmas-was believed to accelerate electrons. However, such a belief is still unverified in spacecraft observations, because the ESW usually moves fast in spacecraft frame and its interior has never been directly explored. Here, we report the first measurements of an ESW's interior, by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission located in a magnetotail reconnection jet. We find that this ESW has a parallel scale of 5λ_De (Debye length), a superslow speed (99  km/s) in spacecraft frame, a longtime duration (250 ms), and a potential drop eφ_0/kT_e∼5%. Inside the ESW, surprisingly, there is no electron acceleration, no clear change of electron distribution functions, but there exist strong electrostatic electron cyclotron waves. Our observations challenge the conventional belief that ESWs are efficient at particle acceleration.Weyl semimetal may be thought of as a gapless topological phase protected by the chiral anomaly, where the symmetries involved in the anomaly are the U(1) charge conservation and the crystal translational symmetry. The absence of a band gap in a weakly interacting Weyl semimetal is mandated by the electronic structure topology and is guaranteed as long as the symmetries and the anomaly are intact. The nontrivial topology also manifests in the Fermi arc surface states and topological response, in particular taking the form of an anomalous Hall effect in magnetic Weyl semimetals, whose magnitude is only determined by the location of the Weyl nodes in the Brillouin zone. Here we consider the situation when the interactions are not weak and ask whether it is possible to open a gap in a magnetic Weyl semimetal while preserving its nontrivial electronic structure topology along with the translational and the charge conservation symmetries. Surprisingly, the answer turns out to be yes. The resulting topologically ordered state provides a nontrivial realization of the fractional quantum Hall effect in three spatial dimensions in the absence of an external magnetic field, which cannot be viewed as a stack of two dimensional states. Our state contains loop excitations with nontrivial braiding statistics when linked with lattice dislocations. We calculate the effect of the emergent photon on threshold production of spinons in U(1) Coulomb spin liquids such as quantum spin ice. The emergent Coulomb interaction modifies the threshold production cross-section dramatically, changing the weak turn-on expected from the density of states to an abrupt onset reflecting the basic coupling parameters. The slow photon typical in existing lattice models and materials suppresses the intensity at finite momentum and allows profuse Cerenkov radiation beyond a critical momentum. BAY-1895344 ic50 These features are broadly consistent with recent numerical and experimental results.
