The BDO office building in Breda is notable not just for being the most sustainable building in the city, but also for serving as an example of how innovative solutions can be integrated to create inspiring spaces. When Bank Van Breda started looking for a new head office in 2004, it fell in love with the old goods station. This impressive architectural heritage building, which had been vacant since 1988, was considered as being the perfect sustainable investment project. The neoclassical building thus became the first private investment in the neighbourhood. The concrete base façades and window frames follow a ton-sur-ton palette, allowing each structure to read as a cohesive sculpture.As both communities are seeing more and more new residential projects, a good connection has become essential. The local authorities held a competition amongst architects and designers throughout the country, which Syb van Breda & Co managed to win. “They wanted something visible – a design that could be admired by pedestrians and cyclists from all sides of the water,” reveals van Breda. With that in mind, they came up with a rather mysterious alternative for the classic swing bridge. With a relatively high counterweight, the bridge swings open horizontally rather than vertically, treating those lucky enough to see the bridge move, to a dynamic surprise. Platform_B and Platform_C offer approximately 15,700 m² of office space arranged around large atriums, topped by 168 apartments. These atriums, featuring tall glass façades towards the street and the garden, skylights, and the exterior materials continuing in the inner façades, function as ‘urban living rooms’. The shared inner courtyard serves as a welcoming public space for the city’s locals, seamlessly integrating 5TRACKS into the urban fabric.
